Rainwishes
Rachel Hannah McGehee
Have you ever wished upon the stars
Or wished upon the sea?
Have you wished upon the sunrise
Or the playful, tickling breeze?
What came of all those wishes, then?
Did you find they were fulfilled?
Or were they all collected and
Into the rain distilled?
Does every raincloud hold a wish,
And every drop a dream?
In puddles, are there hopeful thoughts,
And wishes in a stream?
Do rivers hold our wishes, too;
And lakes, our hopes as well?
If we listen to the ocean waves,
Will they, our secrets tell?
Perhaps next time I hear the rain
I’ll listen carefully…
Perhaps I’ll hear the dreams I’ve dreamt
And wishes wished for me.
