The Secret That Can Never Be Told
Louise Zhou
In that little box in my heart
Inside there's a secret I can no longer hide
Yes, I do realize it's true
The secret I have is only you
But hush. This secret I cannot say
This secret I will never convey
These feelings; I'll be sure to control
for it is the secret that can never be told
You tell me I’m your greatest friend
What else can I say,
When you’re smiling that way?
I can only smile back and simply pretend
That I, too, want to be your friend.
It’s hard for me to hold this guise
You will ultimately be my demise
I don’t know how, I can’t say why
But my heart won’t accept such a lie.
And the truth that you will never comprehend
Is that I don’t want to just be your friend
Yet all this I can never say
I can only let it stay this way
I don’t want us to grow distant and cold
Over this secret that can never be told
I could go ahead, I could just tell, but no--
It's best for you and for me
If I were to leave and let it be
Because, after all
I am not so bold
As to tell you my secret
That can never be told.
