Pick of the Month
Hero-Type
by Barry Lyga
Kevin Ross is a hero. He is a scrawny, pimply and unpopular kid. One afternoon, he heard a struggle in an alley and put a headlock on a big guy trying to kidnap Leah Muldoon, one of the most popular girls in school. It turns out the big guy was a serial killer and Kevin stopped him. Now he’s on national television giving interviews with Leah and everyone loves him.
Kevin does have a secret. He knows he was following Leah around just to occasionally snap a picture of her. He has had a crush on her for most of his teenage life but never dared to actually talk to her. He knows if people find out why he was near the alley his reputation will be ruined and he will be exposed as a phony.
But no one suspects anything and everything seems great. Kevin is getting money for being on television and the mayor gives him a free car complete with patriotic ribbons on it. Kevin’s dad, a military veteran, asks Kevin to take the ribbons off his car. A reporter sees Kevin remove the ribbons and writes a story. Overnight Kevin’s popularity changes to loathing as people question his patriotism.
It’s time for Kevin to take a stand. What really makes a hero?

Friday Night Lights
by H.G. Bissinger
This book really showed why football is America's favorite pastime. As readers see the impact of a high school football team on their town, it's hard not to get caught up in the magic. Even though these players are seen as gods on the field, there are real people behind the masks, all with different reasons for playing. I strongly recommend this book to others....
