Learn about Ghazni, Afghanistan - an Islamic Heritage City
Dr. Mohammad H. Qayoumi, President of San Jose State University, will speak about the City of Ghazni in Afghanistan. Recently chosen as an Islamic Heritage City by ISESCO for 2013, Ghazni was one of the early cities of Islamic civilization in the ninth and tenth century. Dr. Qayoumi will describe some of the architectural monuments of the city as well as key scholars such as Al-Biruni, Avecenna and Sanai, and their many contributions to world civilization.

This one-hour film recounts the true story of an African Muslim prince who was captured and sold into slavery in the American South. After 40 years of enslavement, he regained his freedom, became a national celebrity and dined in the White House.

Essay Contest for Cupertino Teens & Adults
Adults and teens in grades 9-12 who live in Cupertino are invited to participate in the annual Essay Contest sponsored by the Cupertino Library Foundation. The essay contest question is: “Please share lessons you have learned from reading either The Muslim Next Door or The Butterfly Mosque that helped you understand the impact of cultural, religious, or spiritual traditions on your values, behavior or world views. How have these insights influenced your daily life?” Grand Prize winners [2 winners, 1 adult and 1 teen] each receive $500. 2nd Place Prizes of $300 go to 1 adult and 1 teen. Entries due Feb. 15. Silicon Valley Reads On The Air – An Interactive TV Book Club
TV personality Janice Edwards hosts this innovative community conversation about the two featured books of Silicon Valley Reads 2012. A different group of panelists will participate in each show. The program will air live every other Wednesday from 7:30 - 8 p.m. with rebroadcast on alternate weeks. The programs can be viewed as a live webcast or on demand 24/7 at creatvsj.org, or on Channel 30 in San Jose and Campbell. Viewers are encouraged to participate in the discussion with comments and questions by phone, email, text or Tweet.
