Booksale in September 2009 results

Posted: November 25, 2009

The September 2009 sale was a great success! We raised over $6,200 to go towards library projects. Thanks to all of our volunteers for helping out.

Don't forget -- our next book sale is coming up soon, on January 29th through the 31st.

About the Friends

The Friends of the Milpitas Library is an active non-profit organization dedicated to supporting the Milpitas Public Library. There are over 200 Friends composed of community residents and library patrons who show their support for the Milpitas Library by being part of this organization. Membership is open to all.

The Friends' main source of fund-raising is book sales. We run an on-going book sale near the Accounts desk in the library lobby and big three-day sales (Friday, Saturday and Sunday) three times a year. These sales are in January, June and September.

If you want to help the friends, check out our volunteer and donation information, or to become a member, check out our membership information.

Funding

The Friends contributes funds to a number of Library projects and programs. In 2008, we supported:

  • Adult Programming (Author programs, book discussion groups, speakers) ~$7,000
  • Young Adult Programming (Movie programs, Summer Reading Club, poetry slams) ~$3,800
  • Children's Programming (Summer Reading Club, guest performers at story times, craft programs) ~$9,000
  • Gift Giving ~$260
  • Library (Kick stools, projects, special mural project, cart bumpers, book mending, out-of-print books, etc.) ~$10,000

Friends Board of Directors

The Friends Board schedules book sales and allocates funds to various library projects.

The 2009 Board:

  • Diane Davis, President
  • Margie Stephens, Vice President
  • Cindy Maxwell, Secretary
  • Judy Duffy, Treasurer
  • Nonie Veccia, Booksale and Volunteer Coordinator
  • Melanie McInerney, Membership Chair

Donating and volunteering

If you're interested in donating books to our sales or helping out during a sale, please read the volunteer information below.

Volunteering & Donating

Volunteering

If you wish to volunteer for library book sales, call the library at (408) 262-1171 ext. 3616 and leave your name and phone number so a member of the Friends of the Milpitas Library can contact you. You may also sign up to volunteer at the information desk upstairs on the 2nd floor.

Donating Books

Donations are always welcome. You can drop off gently-used books and multimedia to the drop-off slot in the library garage. The donation slot is located in the first level of the parking garage, to the left of the library entrance (near the stairs) and is clearly marked as donations.

If you find that the slot is full or you have a large number of books to donate, please bring the books inside and inquire at the accounts desk -- they should be able to drop the books off in our sorting room.

If you would like a receipt for your tax-deductible donation, ask at one of the reference desks.

Membership

Becoming a member of the Friends
