History of the
Milpitas Library
In 1983, the Milpitas Library moved into its beautiful
building located in the Town Center. Prior to that time, the library
was made up of three small branches located in the old Community
Center on Main Street and in two storefronts on Dixon Landing
Road and Dempsey Road.
After years of politicking and petitioning, a
group of library supporters convinced Santa Clara County to provide
library service to Milpitas. Service consisting of a few bookmobile
stops began in 1955. In 1958, the Civic Center Branch opened in
the old Milpitas Grammar School on Main street, which also housed
the Milpitas City Hall and other city offices.
The Calaveras Branch opened in 1962 in the Fiesta
Shopping Center on Dempsey Road. Three storefronts were combined
to make Calaveras the central library in Milpitas.
The Sunnyhills Branch in a small shopping center
on Dixon Landing Road was opened in 1966 in response to steady
growth.
As Milpitas grew, so did the demand for comprehensive
library.
Using redevelopment funds, a new library was built
in the city hall complex. It opened March 1, 1983 with 80,000
books, a community room and a larger professional staff in a 19,500
square foot building.
The library continues to grow. Patrons are offered
an online public access catalog, online databases, Internet access
and the ability to access the catalog and their library records
from home computers. There are now over 220,000 books, CD's, videocassettes,
talking books, and DVD's available for loan to patrons.
Come and visit an exciting, dynamic library.
