Library Vision 21: Purposes and Goals

We envision the Los Altos Library continuing to grow as an intellectual, informational and cultural center for the community, linking dynamically with networks throughout the community, the state, the nation, and the world. It will become a Mecca of multimedia materials and will be attractive and available to people of all backgrounds and ages.

Residents will be drawn to the library to browse, learn new technologies, read, interact in programs and study groups, access electronic information, and receive guidance and training from librarians who are skilled in information retrieval.

Access methods will be made available for electronic materials on a 24-hour/day basis, as well as enhanced on site borrowing of materials from multi-sources.

Materials will be multi-faceted and categorized, addressing the needs of all ages and serving varying levels of interest and expertise. Books, videos, periodicals, newspapers, software, CD ROMs, cassettes, and electronic databases, and other new media as they are introduced, will be bought by the library. These resources will be made available from home, workplace, or in the library.

Librarians will be highly skilled providers as well as retrievers of information. Through the Wide World Web they will actively train people and link them to the vast resources of networks and on-line databases, some too expensive for the general public to subscribe to, but resonable when shared by the entire community through the library.

Literacy will be the foundation of all areas of the library program, engendering the joy of reading, the excitement of research, and the power of information. The library will have the richest resources ever. The literacy of users and their ability to use these resources will be of paramount importance and central to the library's mission.
