Vision Literacy - Adult Literacy Services

Vision

Vision Literacy is a nationally recognized leader of community partnerships designed to empower adults through literacy.

Mission

Vision Literacy provides innovative literacy services for adults, empowering them to reach their goals and potential by:
  • Promoting mutual commitments of learners and community partners, and
  • Providing an accessible process for investing time, funding, and other resources.

History

Vision Literacy came into existence as the Reading Program in 1985 in answer to the growing numbers of adults in Santa Clara County with difficulties in reading, writing, and basic math skills. It was an early member of the State Library's California Literacy Campaign. Begun as a service of the Santa Clara County Library, Vision Literacy currently serves all Santa Clara County libraries, as well as the City of Mountain View Public Library.

Our services include individual and small group tutoring that focuses on the specific needs of the learner:

  • A community literacy program for individuals who read or write below the 9th grade level
  • A family literacy program designed to instill the love of reading in both parents and children
  • A corrections literacy program for men and women that includes two libraries
  • A literacy program that includes North and South County literacy centers and health resource libraries
  • Literacy services for individuals, including new mothers, dealing with alcohol and drug recovery issues
