Vision Literacy - How to Get Involved

Learners

Vision Literacy provides free tutoring to adults who want to read and write. To join the program, you must be:

• An adult 16 years or older, not enrolled in school
• Speak conversational English
• Read or write below the 9th grade level

You will also need to meet with a tutor for two hours a week for six months or more.

Learner orientations are done by appointment. Please call 408.262.1349 to make an appointment. Learner orientations are held at Santa Clara County Libraries and the City of Mountain View Public Library.

Volunteers

Prospective volunteers begin by attending a 60-minute orientation session, which provides a brief overview of our core projects and the populations we serve. This informal session enables potential volunteers to better understand Vision Literacy's services, discusses expectations of tutor training and allows for a direct question and answer period. To register for orientation, call 408.262.1349 or email info@visionliteracy.org. Registration is recommended at least three days prior to the orientation date.

After completing orientation, interested volunteers are encouraged to register for tutor training or explore additional volunteer opportunities. During the 12.5-hour tutoring training, volunteers become equipped with essential instructional tools needed to create a successful, learner-centered tutoring environment. The training team models effective instruction and maintains a lively pace with a variety of teaching strategies such as lecture, demonstration, individual assignments and group discussion.
