"If any personal description of me is thought desirable, it may be said, I am, in height, six feet, four inches, nearly; lean in flesh, weighing on an average one hundred and eighty pounds; dark complexion, with coarse black hair, and grey eyes -- no other marks or brands recollected."

Cast of Lincoln's hands, from May 20, 1860 - Photo courtesy of Smithsonian's Civil War website

Two days after Lincoln was nominated as the Republican Party's presidential candidate, Leonard Volk made a plaster cast of Lincoln's hands. Because Lincoln's right hand was swollen from all the congratulatory hand-shaking, he grasped a broom handle, still held, to steady his hand. For more information about this photo and see many others, view the Smithsonian's Civil War website.
