Cupertino
Library Campaign
Fact Sheet
Cupertino is
a reading city. Our library has had the highest circulation rate in
the country for over 20 years. In 2002 alone, the city's 54,800 residents
checked out with an amazing two million items. For three years running
the Santa Clara County Library, of which the Cupertino Library is a
member, has been rated #1 in the country in its population-served category.
The
New Library Facility
The Cupertino
Library was last expanded in 1988 to 37,000 square feet. But by
the mid 1990's, it had become outdated and overcrowded as it struggled
to keep up with steadily increasing demand. Studies determined
that an expansion of the current building was not feasible. With
great community support, the City Council authorized $25M to construct
a new library and community hall. As a result, the old library
has been demolished and a new two-story 54,000 square foot state-of-the-art
library is being built in its place.
The new library
will be a lifelong learning center. This building will be the crown
jewel of our community serving as an educational and social center
for all ages. The library will feature study rooms, an exterior
courtyard, larger adult, teen and children's areas, computers,
and wireless internet access and browsing areas for new materials,
magazines and newspapers.
The
Cupertino Library Campaign
A public-private
effort, the Cupertino Library Campaign is raising the necessary
funding for the interior furnishings, equipment, materials and
other resources needed to provide the community with this important,
state-of-the-art, lifelong learning center.
